Walks from The Spinney @Silverlake

These are just some of the walks in this historic and beautiful landscape.

Dorchester and West Dorset offer a vast range of walks, from gentle strolls through historic town centres to strenuous multi-day trails along the Jurassic Coast.

Easy Walks (Short & Gentle)

These routes are generally flat, under 3 miles, and suitable for all fitness levels.

•Durnovaria Town Walk: A 1-mile stroll following the original Roman town walls of Dorchester.

 

•Ratty's Trail (Dorchester River Walk): A 1.5-mile to 2.5-mile circular along the River Frome, perfect for spotting water voles.

 

•Maiden Castle Loop: An easy 2-mile walk around the inner fields of Europe’s largest Iron Age hillfort, offering views of the South Dorset Ridgeway.

 

•Thorncombe Wood & Hardy's Cottage: A 1-mile walk through the woodland that inspired Thomas Hardy, starting from the Thorncombe Wood car park.

 

•Cerne Abbas Giant Viewpoint: A 2.8-mile circular walk with clear views of Britain's largest chalk figure.

 

Medium Walks (Moderate Effort)

These walks typically range from 4 to 10 miles and may include some hill climbs.

•Dorchester to Weymouth: An 8.8-mile to 10-mile linear route through quiet valleys and peaceful countryside, ending with a view of Weymouth Bay.

​

 Puddletown Forest Circular: A 3.6-mile to 5.8-km route through diverse woodland and heathland habitats.

​

•Ringstead Bay to Osmington Mills: A 4.4-mile circular trail that blends clifftop coastal views with wooded inland paths and a local pub stop

 

•Stones & Circles Walk: A 7-mile trek starting from Portesham that takes in ancient stone circles and abandoned quarries.

 

•Hardy Monument to Littlebredy: A scenic circular from the Hardy Monument leading to the picturesque village of Littlebredy and its waterfall.

Long Walks (Strenuous & Multi-Day)

These are long-distance trails or challenging day hikes over 10 miles.

•Frome Valley Trail (Evershot to Dorchester): A 16-mile day hike following the River Frome through chalk downlands and meadows.

 

•South Dorset Ridgeway: A 17-mile section of the South West Coast Path offering high-altitude panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast.

 

•Maiden Castle to Martinstown & Hardy Monument: A 15-mile to 25-km strenuous circular that covers major historical landmarks and significant elevation.

 

•Cerne Valley Way: A 26-mile circular route that meanders through various hamlets and villages in the Cerne Valley.

 

•The Purbeck Way: A 27.9-mile point-to-point trail stretching from Wareham to the coast, passing through Corfe Castle.
